Drone topographic surveying and aerial photogrammetry

DroneMex connects surveying firms, geotechnical labs, contractors, and developers with AFAC-licensed pilots who map sites, road corridors, and material stockpiles by drone and deliver a georeferenced orthomosaic, point cloud, digital elevation model, and contour lines ready to drop into CAD or GIS. Post the mission with your area, accuracy tolerance, and required deliverables; compare proposals from pilots whose AFAC license and aircraft registration are verified on their profile; and payment stays protected in Stripe escrow until you approve the deliverable.

What deliverables does a drone topographic survey actually produce?

A photogrammetric flight produces four deliverables that plug straight into a project: a georeferenced orthomosaic of the site, a dense point cloud, a digital elevation or terrain model, and contour lines at whatever interval you specify. Where the site is covered in dense brush or jungle, a LiDAR sensor can filter the vegetation and return the real ground surface beneath the canopy. Files are handed over in the formats you agree with the pilot — DWG, LAS, or GeoTIFF among others — so your office can keep working without conversions.

How accurate is drone photogrammetry, and when do I need ground control points?

GSD is the ground distance each pixel represents: flying lower lowers the GSD and raises visible detail. Absolute accuracy is a separate matter and depends on positioning — with RTK or PPK every photo is tied to corrected coordinates, which sharply reduces how many ground control points are needed. Even so, GCPs measured with a total station or survey GPS are worth placing whenever the survey feeds a boundary, a title, public works, or any deliverable that must hold up against a third party. State your tolerance in centimeters in the mission so pilots quote the right method.

How much time and cost does a drone flight save versus a traditional survey crew?

A crew with a total station or GPS RTK collects point by point, while a drone captures the entire surface in a single pass: large parcels, road corridors, or material banks that used to take days in the field are covered in hours of flight plus office processing. The cost shape changes too, because you contract one flight per mission instead of sustaining crew days and travel expenses. Ground survey does not go away — it is still what sets the control points and verifies whatever sits under a roof, under a structure, or under dense vegetation.

Can a drone measure the volume of a stockpile or earthwork cut?

Yes, and volumetrics is one of the highest-value uses of aerial survey. From the point cloud, cut and fill volumes are computed against a reference surface or against the previous flight, which lets you close earthwork estimates and measure stockpiles without sending anyone up the slope or halting operations. Repeating the flight per cut or per month builds a dated series that serves as evidence for the client, the supervising engineer, or the project's lender.

How is a survey mission priced and paid for on DroneMex?

Each pilot quotes on real scope: hectares or kilometers to cover, the GSD and tolerance requested, whether RTK/PPK or LiDAR is required, and which processed deliverables are included. The platform minimum mission budget is $1,000 MXN and the platform commission is 10%. Payment is held in Stripe escrow from the moment you accept a proposal and is released to the pilot when you approve the deliverable, or automatically 72 hours after delivery if you have not opened a dispute.

Can a surveying firm subcontract a drone pilot instead of buying a drone?

Yes, and it is a common arrangement: many surveying, geotechnical, and civil engineering practices already sell photogrammetry to their clients without owning an aircraft or employing a certified pilot. Posting the mission on DroneMex lets them subcontract per project to a pilot whose AFAC license and aircraft registration are verified on their profile, with no equipment purchase and no staff certification to pay for. The firm receives the raw and processed data and folds it into its own signed deliverable.
